What Is a Good Internet Speed?
Speed requirements by activity and household size, download vs. upload, advertised vs. measured speed, and an interactive bandwidth calculator.
There's no single "good" speed
A good internet speed depends entirely on what you do online and how many people or devices use the connection at once. A single person who browses and streams SD video can be comfortable at 25 Mbps. A household of five with 4K streaming, video calls, and online gaming happening simultaneously may need several times that.
Typical requirements by activity
- Web browsing and email: 1–5 Mbps
- Music streaming: 1–3 Mbps
- SD video streaming: 3–4 Mbps
- HD video streaming: 5–8 Mbps
- 4K video streaming: 25 Mbps or more
- HD video calls: 3–6 Mbps (both download and upload)
- Online gaming: 3–6 Mbps, though latency and jitter matter more than raw speed
- Cloud backups and large uploads: driven by upload speed, not download

Household size and simultaneous use
Bandwidth needs add up when activities happen at the same time, not just when they happen at all. A single 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps whether one person or five people live in the home — but if two people stream 4K while a third is on a video call, those needs stack. Plan for your busiest realistic moment, not your average one.
Download vs. upload
Most residential plans are asymmetric — download speed is advertised prominently, upload speed is often much lower. That's fine for browsing and streaming, which are download-heavy, but it can bottleneck video calls, live streaming, and cloud backups, which depend on upload. If those activities feel worse than your download number suggests they should, check your upload speed specifically.
Advertised vs. measured speed
The speed on your bill is a maximum under ideal conditions, not a guarantee. Wi-Fi signal strength, the number of connected devices, your router's age, and network congestion at busy times can all bring your measured speed below what's advertised. Testing over a wired Ethernet connection removes Wi-Fi as a variable when you want to check what your ISP is actually delivering.
