Why upload matters as much as download
A video call sends your camera and microphone feed out at the same time it receives everyone else's — it's the one common activity that leans on upload and download roughly equally. Most home internet plans are asymmetric, with a download number advertised prominently and a much smaller upload number underneath. That means a connection can post an impressive result on a download-only speed test and still produce a blurry, frozen, or dropped call, because the bottleneck is the upload side the test didn't emphasize. Typical requirements
As practical guidance rather than a universal rule, a basic one-to-one call with your camera on generally needs roughly 1–2 Mbps in each direction, while an HD call typically wants closer to 3–4 Mbps each way. Screen sharing adds its own overhead on top of the video feed, and group calls with several visible video tiles push the requirement higher still, since your device is usually sending one stream out while receiving several back. Actual numbers vary by app, video resolution, and how each service adapts quality to available bandwidth, so treat these as a starting point for troubleshooting rather than a hard threshold.
Latency and jitter
Bandwidth is only part of what makes a call feel smooth. High latency — the round-trip time to the other party — shows up as an awkward delay before a response, which often leads to people talking over each other because neither side reacts to the other in real time. High jitter, which is variation in that delay from one moment to the next, is even more disruptive: even with plenty of bandwidth available, uneven jitter causes choppy audio, stuttering, or video frames that freeze and skip because packets arrive out of the steady rhythm the call software expects. Multiple participants and multiple calls at once
Requirements multiply with simultaneous use, not just with participant count on a single call. If two people in the same household are each on a separate video call at the same time, plan for roughly double the bandwidth of one call, since each call is an independent stream competing for the same connection. A household running several calls alongside other activities — streaming, gaming, large downloads — should size its connection for that busiest realistic moment, not for a single call in isolation.
Connection instability and competing traffic
Even a connection that comfortably meets the numbers above can degrade mid-call if something else on the network suddenly demands bandwidth. A large file upload, a cloud backup kicking off, or another device starting a big download can spike loaded latency — the delay measured while the connection is under load — and that spike is often what causes a call to stutter or drop out for a few seconds even though nothing changed about the call itself. If important calls keep degrading unpredictably, pause large transfers and backups during the call, and test loaded latency specifically rather than relying on an idle speed test, since an idle test won't show how the connection behaves under real competing traffic.
