Internet Speed for Streaming
How much internet speed you need for SD, HD, Full HD, and 4K streaming, why multiple streams stack, and what actually causes buffering.
Bandwidth by resolution
Streaming services encode video at different bitrates depending on resolution, and each stream draws on your download bandwidth independently. As a practical guide:
- SD (standard definition): roughly 3–4 Mbps
- HD (720p): roughly 5–8 Mbps
- Full HD (1080p): roughly 8–10 Mbps
- 4K (Ultra HD): roughly 25 Mbps or more
These are per-stream figures, not household totals, and they're practical guidance rather than fixed rules — the exact number for any given video varies by streaming service, video codec, and how much motion or detail is in the scene. A service using a more efficient codec can deliver good-looking 4K at a lower bitrate than one using an older codec; a fast-moving sports broadcast needs more bandwidth than a static talking-head video at the same resolution.
Multiple simultaneous streams
Bandwidth needs stack additively when more than one stream runs at the same time, because each stream is a separate download competing for the same connection. Two people watching 4K in different rooms while a third streams HD in the kitchen isn't a 25 Mbps household — it's closer to 25 + 25 + 6 ≈ 56 Mbps just for video, before accounting for anything else using the connection.
If your plan is close to your peak simultaneous-use total, streams will drop quality or buffer during your busiest hours even though they run fine when you're the only one watching. Wi-Fi limitations
A fast plan doesn't guarantee a fast stream if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. Older Wi-Fi standards, a router broadcasting on the crowded 2.4GHz band, and physical distance or walls between your device and the router can all cap the speed a streaming device actually receives, regardless of what your ISP delivers to the house. This is especially common with smart TVs and streaming sticks, which are often the least capable Wi-Fi devices in a home and are placed farthest from the router. Common causes of buffering
Buffering is rarely explained by raw download speed alone. Several other factors commonly cause streams to stall even on a connection that's technically fast enough:
- Loaded latency and bufferbloat — when other devices on the network are actively uploading or downloading, queuing delay can spike and disrupt the steady delivery a stream needs, even though your idle bandwidth looks fine.
- Wi-Fi interference — neighboring networks, cordless phones, microwaves, and other 2.4GHz devices can cause packet loss and retransmissions that interrupt playback.
- ISP peak-hour congestion — shared local infrastructure can slow down during evening hours when everyone in your area is streaming at once, independent of anything happening in your home.
- Home network congestion — many connected devices (phones, laptops, smart-home gadgets, other streams) sharing one connection and one router's processing capacity can degrade performance for everyone.

How to test streaming readiness
A single speed test tells you your connection's best case, not what you get during a typical evening. For a more useful picture, run the speed test twice: once with nothing else active on the network, and again during your household's normal peak usage — other people streaming, gaming, on video calls, or running downloads. The gap between those two numbers is a good indicator of how much headroom your plan actually has for reliable streaming when it matters most.
